Cases of attacks on Indians to be dealt with firmly: Australian judge

An Australian Supreme Court judge today assured lawyers in New Delhi that the judiciary there would firmly deal the cases relating to recent attacks on Indian students and award deterrent punishment.

"The courts in Australia are not pro-active. So, we have to wait till the case comes to the court. When it comes to the court, we assure you we will deal with it very sternly and ward deterrent punishment," justice Jennett, a Supreme Court judge from Australia was quoted as saying by senior advocate JP Singh.

The woman judge also said the judiciary in Australia was quite concerned over the attacks.

"Australia is strict on racism. We also have a law against racism," she said in response to a query by Singh about the recent attacks on Indian students there during an interaction with lawyers here.

A delegation of judges of the Supreme Court as well as Federal Courts of Australia participated in a workshop and an interactive session with Delhi high court judges and the lawyers here.

Over 100 incidents of attacks on Indians, particularly students, were reported last year and the attacks have continued this year unabated.
