Four policemen shot dead in J&K's Shopian

Three policemen were today killed in a militant attack in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, the police said.

Four policemen were killed in a militant attack in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.

Terrorists fired indiscriminately upon a police party at Arhama. A police team has rushed to the spot to investigate the incident.

The cops injured in the firing were rushed to nearby hospital, however, they succumbed to their injuries.

The martyred policemen are identified as Constable Ishfaq Ahmad Mir, Constable Javaid Ahmad Bhat, Constable Mohammad Iqbal Mir and SPO Adil Manzoor Bhat.  

Police have registered a case and initiated investigations in the in this matter.

Earlier in the day, a top Hizbul Mujahideen militant among two ultras was killed in an encounter with security forces in Anantnag district.

Altaf Kachru, one of the oldest Hizbul Mujahideen militants operating in the Kashmir Valley was killed in the operation. He was involved in many cases including killing of policemen.

The second militant was yet to be identified "It was a specific operation and in a swift action both the terrorists involved in several cases of civilian atrocities and attacks on policemen were eliminated," Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Range, S P Pani said. 

Giving details of the encounter, police said security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Muniward village in Khanabal area of the district early this morning following specific information about the presence of militants there.
