The double murder of a former Mayor and his driver in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district on Sunday brought the state government under a scathing attack from the Opposition, which has alleged that the "double engine government (NDA at Centre and in state) means a 300-times increase in murder and crimes".

Bihar's Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav also attacked Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi over his statement asking "criminals not to indulge in criminal activities while the Pitripaksh was underway" saying "it will not be surprising to see both Modi as well as CM Nitish Kumar falling at criminals' feet due out of fear in coming days."

Modi, while inaugurating the famous Pitripaksh fair in Gaya on Sunday, had asked criminals and antisocial elements to shun crime or leave Gaya during the 15-day event. "Otherwise, they will be put behind bars," he said.

Tejashwi said, "The reason for -- Dilasa (Nitish) and Khulasa (Modi) master's -- fear is that criminals in Bihar are in possession of more AK-47 rifles than the policemen in the state. Nitish ji's failure has led to AK-47 becoming a common weapon in Bihar." Recently, cops had also seized consignments of AK-47 in Munger.

On Sunday, former Muzaffarpur mayor Samir Kumar was killed when criminals strafed him with at least 16 bullets using an AK-47. His driver, Rohit Kumar, was also shot around 12 times. The double murder led to protests and demonstrations in the town. "Samir was also a suspect in the 2012 kidnapping of Navruna Chakravorty. He had political links as well as ran a real estate business," a senior official said.

Citing a list of recent murders in the state, including that of businessmen in Samastipur and Patna and a student in Motihari (East Champaran), Tejashwi said, "Double engine government is equal to 300-times more murders and crimes. Still, the government will continue reiterating its two favourite dialogues – 'there is rule of law in Bihar and law will take its own course' and 'we neither save nor implicate anyone'."

Other Opposition parties including Congress and Hindustani Awam Morcha have also cornered the government over "deteriorating law and order in the state."

Minor pulled out of train, raped

A minor girl was dragged out of a train and raped by four youths in Bihar's Bhojpur district last week, police said on Monday. "The incident took place when the victim boarded a train at Hasan Bazaar railway station to visit her aunt at Ara, late on Thursday evening, when the youths teased her and later forced her out of the train and raped her. She reported the incident to the police only two days later as the youths had threatened to kill her only brother if she spoke about it. Massive raids are underway to nab the culprits," said a senior police official and added that her parents were differently-abled persons.
