Polymath and science writer Mukul Sharma passes away

Mukul Sharma, a well-known polymath and science writer passed away on Thursday in New Delhi. Sharma is surivived by his wife Binita and daughters Kamalini and Konkana (the actress). 

He was earlier married to Aparna Sen and was known for his role in Aparna Sen's Paroma which released in 1984. He was the editor of Science Today and ran a popular column called Mindsport in the Illustrated Weekly of India and later Sunday Times. 

According to report, Sharma was a student of English literature from Ashutosh College in Kolkata. 

He had moved to Mumbai in 1986 to edit Science Today, despite not having a science degree. 

Reminiscing Pritish Nandy wrote: “Mukul Sharma lived next door, was my best friend. We did the front page cartoon for #TheTelegraph I wrote poetry. He, science fiction. When I came to Mumbai to join The Times, he took over Science Today. Wrote MindSport for IWI. He passed away. Yesterday. I hear. In Delhi.”

Journalist Sachin Kalbag added: “Mukul Sharma is no more. He and Yakov Perelman were singularly responsible for my lifelong fascination for maths (although I never made a career out of that). More than anything, his contribution to society was: he taught us to be curious, without ever "teaching" us how to.”
