Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was on Wednesday asked to vacate her government accommodation in Delhi within a month, a few months after the Gandhi family lost the VIP SPG protection.

In a notice to Congress General Secretary in charge of East UP, the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said the decision was taken as she no longer enjoys SPG protection.

She currently occupies Type 6B house New Delhi's posh Lodhi Estate.

The ministry informed that consequent upon withdrawal of SPG protection and grant of Z+ security cover by Ministry of Home Affairs, which does not have provision for allotment and retention of government accommodation on security grounds, the allotment of the house is cancelled with effect from July 1.

"One month concessional period on the same rent i. e. upto 01.08 2020 is allowed as per rules," the notice said.

"It is, therefore, advised to vacate the house on or before 01/08/2020. Any stay beyond 01.08 2020 will attract damage charges/penal rent as per rules," it said.

Earlier in November 2019, the government withdrew Special Protection Group (SPG) cover of the Gandhi family, including interim president Sonia Gandhi and MP Rahul Gandhi.

On November 8, the MHA had decided to remove the SPG protection given to the Gandhi family and give them 'Z Plus' security instead, provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

The decision was taken after assessing threat inputs from all intelligence agencies, which suggested that in the recent past, there has been no direct threat to the family, the government said.

The Gandhis had got the SPG cover since the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.
