Counting for the Maharashtra assembly election 2019 is underway. Polling for all 288 constituencies took place on October 21.

Almost all exit polls have predicted a BJP-Shiv Sena alliance win in the 13th Maharashtra assembly elections.

BJP contested the state polls in an alliance - Mahayuti - with Shiv Sena and some other smaller allies.

BJP emerged as the single largest party and is all set to form the government in alliance with the Shiv Sena.

Addressing a press conference as BJP-Shiv Sena is set to retain power in the state, incumbent Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said, "In 2014, BJP contested on more than 200 seats and won around 120 seats, but this time, we contested on 150 seats along with others on 15 seats, and still we are getting over 100 seats, therefore, our strike rate this time is more than 70%."

"It is happening after several decades that in Maharashtra a government after completing its 5-year full term is being re-elected to power once again," said Fadnavis.

As for Shiv Sena, this is the first time that a member of the Thackeray family is contesting an election. Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray, son of Uddhav Thackeray, is contesting from Worli assembly constituency in Mumbai.

The ruling alliance's main adversary is "maha-aghadi", led by the Congress and the NCP. The Congress fielded 147 candidates and the ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) 121.

The opposition's campaign never really gained momentum with Rahul Gandhi and Sharad Pawar addressing some odd number of rallies. The Congress-NCP campaign was mostly led by the candidates and any fighting chance of the alliance depends on the strength of the local campaign.

Total voters in Maharashtra are 8,98,39,600 - 4,28,43,635 women and 4,68,75,750 men -  cast their votes on October 21 to elect 288 new members of the new assembly. There are a total of 3237 candidates, including 235 women, in the fray.
