Electioneering reached a feverish pitch in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hitting out at the Congress for comparing the rupee’s slide with the age of his mother. “When one doesn’t have real issues to talk about, he resorts to abusing somebody else’s mother,” PM Modi said.

Meanwhile, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said that the fear of losing 2019 elections has created hatred in Modi’s heart. Gandhi accused PM Modi of betraying people on promise of providing jobs and depositing Rs 15 lakh in bank accounts. During the 2014 Lok Sabha election campaign, Modi had highlighted the issue of black money and promised to bring it back.

Addressing a rally at Chhatarpur in Madhya Pradesh,  PM Modi took a dig at UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and said 125 crore people of the country were the “high-command” of his government, which was “not remote-controlled by a madam”.  He particularly hit out at the Bollywood actor turned Congress leader Raj Babbar, who had kicked up a row in Indore on Thursday comparing the falling value of rupee against US dollar with the age of the PM’s mother. “The coffers of banks were emptied for the rich during madam’s government. However, our government opened doors of banks for the needy youth,” Modi said.

The PM asked why the Congress was worried about Madhya Pradesh chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan being called “mama”. “They are worried Shivraj is called mama...Why, don’t you remember (Ottavio) Quattrocchi mama and Warren Anderson (then chairman of the Union Carbide) mama,” he said, referring to the Bofors scandal and the 1984 Bhopal Gas tragedy. He said the Congress was voted out of power in Madhya Pradesh 15 years ago because it indulged in the politics of divisiveness.

Gandhi who addressed rallies in Sagar said while Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan speaks with decency, the PM lacks it when he attacks the Congress and his family members. “When you hear Modi’s speech, he speaks with hatred and also lies. People have lost faith in him. Now, when Modi comes, people say he will speak lies,” he said.
