Lahore: Man kills wife, son in yet another case of honour killing

In yet another case of honour killing, a man allegedly killed his wife and 10-month-old son here on suspicion that the minor was not his son and his wife had an illicit relationship, police said on Thursday.

Sajid Ahmed, a resident of the old city, was married to Sumaira Bibi, 30, for eight years and the couple had three children. Sajid suspected Sumaira had relations with another person of their locality and their third son, 10-month-old Eman, was born out of his wife's illicit relations, Sajid's brother told police.

He said Eman was diabetic and Sajid often questioned Sumaira how come the new born had this disease as neither he nor she was diabetic. On Wednesday Sajid opened fire on Sumaira and Eman after having a quarrel over the issue. Both died on the spot. Later, Sajid surrendered to the police and confessed to his crime.

Police have also taken into custody Sajid's sister for provoking him about his wife's 'illicit' relations. Superintendent of Police (old city) Asad Sarfraz told reporters that it was an "honour killing" case.

"Sajid opened fire at Sumaira and Eman at their home when she was feeding the minor," he said, adding the police had recovered revolver from Sajid and booked him under section 302 of Pakistan Penal Code.

Last year, 860 women became victims of honour killing in different parts of Pakistan. In most cases the culprits escaped punishment after being pardoned by complainants who happened to be their close relatives.
