From March 19 to Oct 20, highlights of PM Modi's addresses to nation on COVID-19

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (October 20) delivered his seventh address to the nation since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. He spoke on various topics including the COVID-19 outbreak, India's race for the vaccine and much more.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (October 20) delivered his seventh address to the nation since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, which lasted for 13 minutes. In his speech, PM Modi spoke on various topics including the coronavirus outbreak, India's race for the vaccine, guidelines for the celebration of festivals amid pandemic and much more.

Here is the respective duration of all six speeches by the Prime Minister thus far:

March 19 - 28 minutes 54 seconds

PM Modi had called for resolve and restraint to fight coronavirus. On March 19, PM Modi announced the 'Janta Curfew' for March 22, to prepare the citizens for a longer lockdown in the future. On the 'Janta Curfew' day, people were requested to stay indoors from 7 AM-9 PM.

The prime minister had also urged Indians to practice social distancing.

March 24 - 29 minutes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a 21-day nation-wide lockdown urging citizens with folded hands to follow the directives to prevent further spread of Covid-19.

The prime minister had announced the unprecedented decision in a televised address to the nation. He had also said that the Centre and the state governments have set aside Rs 15000 crore to strengthen health infrastructure across the country.

April 3 - 11 minutes, 34 seconds

PM Modi in a 9 AM video address to the nation through his Twiter handle had appealed to people to switch off all lights of their houses at 9 PM on April 5, and light diyas (lamps) and candles, for 10 minutes, in a bid to show solidarity with the people at the forefront of the war against coronavirus.

April 14 - 21 minutes 49 seconds

On April 14, the last day of lockdown 1.0, the Prime Minister, addressed the nation at 10 AM, announcing the extension of the 21-day coronavirus lockdown for 19 more days, till May 3, to further check the spread of the infectious disease.

May 12 - 34 minutes 5 seconds

Prime Minister Narendra Modi once again announced that there will be a further extension of the lockdown beyond May 17 but the next phase, Unlock 4, will be different.

"Based on the suggestions by states, information related to lockdown 4 will be given to you before 18th May. We will fight Corona and we will move forward," he had said.

PM Modi also announced a complete package worth Rs 20 lakh crore to deal with the economic crisis due to the COVID-19 and had urged the people to buy and promote local products and brands. He urged the people to be 'vocal for the local'.

June 30 - 16 minutes

In his June 30 address, PM Modi compared the spread of coronavirus in India to other countries across and said that the nation was still in a very stable situation, in the battle against the infectious disease.

He reiterated the importance of social distancing and wearing masks and warned people against letting down their guard against the pandemic.

He added, "timely decisions and measures have played a great role. However, there is a need to continue the precautions we have been taking. We can't afford to drop our guard."

PM Modi had also announced an extension of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana to provide free ration for over 80 crore people, mostly poor. The scheme runs until the end of November.

October 20 - 13 minutes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday assured the people that the Centre is making all efforts to ensure that the COVID-19 vaccine, whenever it is launched, reaches every Indian.

In his address to the nation at 6 pm, the PM asked the people to follow strict guidelines.

He asked people to be careful as COVID-19 has bot ended, adding that "lockdown may have ended but the virus is still there". 

"If you are careless and moving around without mask, you are putting yourself, children, and the elderly at risk. This is not time to be careless or to believe that COVID-19 has ended. We must keep in mind that lockdown may have ended but the virus is still there," said PM Modi.
