Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was on Monday admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a urinary tract infection.

He is currently undergoing treatment by a team of doctors supervised by AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria. AIIMS on Tuesday morning gave a medical bulletin saying that Vajpayee is stable and is responding to medicines. AIIMS in its communique said, " Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee's condition is stable. He is responding to treatment and is on injectable antibiotics. All vital parameters are stable. He will continue to be in hospital till infection is controlled".

Many senior leaders have visited AIIMS to enquire about Vajpayee's health. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday came to AIIMS where he met Vajpayee' family members.  BJP president Amit Shah, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and Health Minister J P Nadda were among those who paid a visit to the ailing leader. A BJP statement said that the leader was admitted for routine check-up and investigations on doctors' advice.

"PM visited former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee at AIIMS today. He was at AIIMS for about 50 minutes. The Prime Minister interacted with family members of Shri Vajpayee. He also spoke to doctors and enquired about the health of Shri Vajpayee," the Prime Minister's Office tweeted.

Vajpayee was the prime minister between 1998 and 2004. As his health deteriorated, Vajpayee slowly withdrew from public life and has been confined to his residence for many years. The BJP had celebrated Vajpayee's 93rd birthday on 25 December last year.
