Delhi: Doctors threaten indefinite strike from today over non-payment of salaries

The association believes that it has already given ample time to the authorities to thing over their problem and find a solution.

Senior doctors of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation-run hospitals went on day-long casual leave on Monday citing non-payment of salaries. What is going to make matters worse is that the doctors have threatened an indefinite strike from Tuesday.

While speaking to the media RR Gautam, President of the Municipal Corporation Doctors’ Association said that they are prepared to go on a strike if their demands are not met.

The doctors association which constitutes of 1,200 members had threatened that its members of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation hospitals would go on a mass casual leave if their three-month pending salary was not released by the corporation.

The association believes that it has already given ample time to the authorities to thing over their problem and find a solution.

The doctors association had declared to go on a strike from October 19 but deferred the decision keeping in mind the coronavirus pandemic and a resolution from the government.

Earlier, on Thursday (October 22) doctors of the Hindu Rao Hospital, another hospital under the North Delhi Municipal Corporation had held protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi over non-payment of salaries. Protesters were seen burning effigies of Ravana. Doctors of  Kasturba Hospital and Rajen Babu Tuberculosis Hospital had also joined the protest on Thursday.

According to media reports, 5 resident doctors of the Hindu Rao hospital are sitting on a hunger strike since Friday.

Protesting doctors had to face repercussions as the Delhi government removed Hindu Rao Hospital from the list of designated Covid-19 hospitals earlier this month.
