Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had waived loans worth Rs 3.5 lakh crore of 15 select industrialists during his tenure.

Addressing a rally in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district ahead of the state Assembly polls, Mr Gandhi said he wanted Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to become agriculture centres in five years and provide food, fruits and vegetables to the country.

"In the last four-five years, Modiji gave Rs 3.5 lakh crore to the 15 richest people. While an amount of Rs 35,000 crore is needed yearly to run the MGNREGA scheme in the country, he waived loans worth 10 times that amount of 15 select industrialists," he said in Charama, PTI reported.

"Modiji has given the keys to the treasury to 15 select people but the Congress wants the keys to be given to farmers, youth, poor, women and tribals," Gandhi said.

"Chhattisgarh is a prosperous state, but the BJP govt steals from the people and helps 15-20 of rich industrialist friends," he said.

He said while the Prime Minister of Pakistan (Nawaz Sharif) was jailed because his name appeared in Panama papers, no action was taken against Chief Minister Raman Singh's son.

"Raman Singh's son's name appears in Panama Papers but no action is taken against him because CM Raman Singh and Mr Modi are corrupt," the Congress chief said.

"If the CM doesn't want to answer that then he should explain to the people of Chhattisgarh why is no action taken against his son? In Pakistan the PM is jailed because his name appeared in Panama papers," he said.

"Modi ji says he's fighting against corruption. But when he comes to Chhattisgarh he doesn't tell you the CM is corrupt. Your Rs 5000 Cr disappeared in chit-fund scam, 310 FIRs were registered but no action was taken because CM was involved," the Congress president said.

"Second is PDS Scam. Rs 36,000 Cr of the people of Chhattisgarh was looted. Diary mili, diary mein likha tha 'CM Madam ko paisa diya. Dr sahab ko paisa diya' (A diary was found, it was written 'CM madam was paid, Dr sahab was paid'). I ask Raman Singh ji who is this CM Madam and Dr sahab whose names were found in the diary in connection with the scam," he added.

The 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly will go to the polls in two phases -- on November 12 and 20.

The Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls will be held on November 28.

The votes will be counted on December 11 along with Mizoram, Telangana and Rajasthan.
