If the mind is set to do something, then age also does not come in the way. Sohan Singh Gill, a resident of Datta village in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, has surprised everyone by getting an MA in English degree at the age of 83.

Gill says he always felt that his studies were left incomplete which is why he decided to do get the masters degree, a wish budding for 61 years.

Born on August 15, 1936, in Datta, Gill started his education from Pandori Ganga Singh, did his tenth from Mahilpur and then got his Bachelor in Arts (BA) degree from Khalsa College, Mahilpur. In 1958, on the insistence of the Vice-Principal of his college, he decided to do an MA but later got married and went to Kenya with his wife and worked there for 33 years. He returned to India after about 60 years in 1991, but the call of his vice-principal hanged around his mind.

He started preparing for MA in the year 2018 and got a degree from Lovely University, Phagwara. Gill has a son who lives with his family abroad while he and his wife stay alone in the village and depend on their pensions.

"There is no age to study. I was determined to do my MA and I secured 67% marks," said Gill adding that he blames the education system for the new generation's dislike for higher education in the country and their preference to study abroad.
