Doctors have come up with a technique named “Autocart” to treat articular cartilage defect. It is a common knee injury, often resulting from sports related trauma or overuse. The articular cartilage's natural healing capacity is limited due to the unique anatomy of the knee. Without proper management of the articular cartilage damage, the knee joint worsens over time. Additionally, a focal articular cartilage defect is when the cartilage damage is confined to 1 or 2 specific areas within the joint.

Many practicing orthopaedic surgeons have started using this potent technique as a preferred treatment for patients suffering from cartilage defects.
While commenting on the procedure, renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Thilak, working with one of the most prestigious Hospitals and Medical College, CMC Vellore said “The AutoCart Procedure is a novel procedure to treat Cartilage defects. In some of our cases, it has shown cartilage regeneration. The entire AutoCart procedure is autologous, meaning no chemical agents are used throughout the treatment, making it a completely safe option for all patients.”
According to Dr Shreyash Gajjar, a well-recognized Sports Arthroscopy Surgeon practicing in Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute, Mumbai- “AutoCart procedure is a highly recommended procedure for all patients suffering from medium to large cartilage defects. The treatment has generated promising results with most of the athletes and sports personalities who have had severe cartilage lesions.”

Focal articular cartilage defects can occur with various symptoms, such as pain, throbbing, swelling, tenderness, and restricted mobility. In certain instances, the cartilage can become detached and float within the knee joint, leading to patients experiencing episodes of catching or locking in the knee. Surgical management of Cartilage defects is constantly evolving. Autocart, which stands for “All Autologous Cartilage Repair,” addresses focal articular cartilage defects in a completely autologous manner.

AutoCart is a single sitting minor surgical procedure in which the surgeon extracts small pieces of healthy articular cartilage from the adjoining area of the cartilage damage from the patient's knee, combines it with Platelet Rich Plasma and applies it on the lesion site with the help of an autologous sealant (fibrin). It is allegedly a safe, and cost-effective procedure for treating cartilage lesions. The key advantages of AutoCart compared to other treatments for chondral repair are stated to be that it eliminates the need for the cumbersome process of cell culture, making it possible to be performed in a single sitting surgical procedure. It is also an entirely autologous procedure, which means there is no usage of chemical agents during the entire treatment, making it safe for all patients. Doctors are affirming it to be an effective alternative to standard autologous chondrocyte implantation.
