Actor Imran Khan who will be seen in a completely hatke role in the upcoming Vishal Bhardwaj film has already been creating a buzz with his new look in it. But insiders reveal that it’s not just the look that the actor has gone to great lengths to perfect for his character, but even the mannerisms and language.

“Considering the kind of image Imran has, he himself took it up as a challenge to break away from the uber-romantic hero to play a hardcore Haryanvi Jat in Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. Several makeovers were considered, but the bearded look worked the best, as many felt that it looked dangerous and sexy too. But while it didn’t take long to convince him to have a moustache and a beard, it did take a while to decide the style that he would sport, until Imran came up with the look that he is seen sporting in the film. The beard adds maturity and a hint of wickedness to his otherwise chocolate-boy looks,” says the insider. The unit source says that Imran’s look made the others who were rehearsing with him also change their approach towards him. “Everyone was treating Imran with a certain distance and wariness post the look. The casting director Honey Trehan too felt that this subtle feedback added to Imran’s new personality.”

However, sources insist that looks apart, Imran was more keen to perfect the body language and the diction, so he started rehearsing with a New Delhi-based theatre group Act 1 that Vishal recommended. “Vishal briefed his old friend NK Sharma (of the theatre group) about the script and his vision of Imran’s role in the film and he readily agreed to coach Imran for his Haryanvi accent,” adds the insider. Sharma says, “Imran was already a star and we had to turn him into Matru. Teaching anyone Haryanvi is not so difficult as it is a variant of Hindi and can be learnt with some right voice modulation, but it is the body language that we had to change completely.” However what even took the veteran by surprise was Imran’s non-starry attitude when he rehearsed with the group.

“Imran had no nakhras of stars even though he is amongst the top stars in his age group. Our premise where we train for theatre is also not the most comfortable space but there were no complaints ever. He would come to us every morning around 11 and hang around till 7 every evening. And work very hard,” adds Sharma. Imran himself found the workshops so interesting that even after the rehearsals whenever he can manage to get a few days off from his shoots, he goes to New Delhi to their theatre group to train with them.
