For the phase IV stations, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will be leasing out services of escalators and lifts to private contractors. These lifts and escalators will be set up under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) for Phase IV across the 104 km long line.

Private companies who take up this work will be given a lease period of 37 years for both the services on stations that are yet to be constructed under phase IV of DMRC. The maintenance of escalators and lifts, as well their cleanliness will be the responsibility of the company concerned.

According to the rail body, the organisation will have to provide services for 20 hours per day, starting from 4 in the morning to 12 midnight across all the Metro stations. Around 285 lifts and more than 340 escalators are to be constructed across the six corridors of Phase-IV.

Meanwhile, the DMRC, which is still awaiting clearance from the Delhi government to start its work on Phase IV, has already gone into the preparatory mode. Earlier, the DMRC conducted geotechnical surveys at different sites where stations for Phase IV will be coming up. Inviting EOI for lifts and escalators is another step in this regard.

This new phase will connect peripheral areas of the national Capital with central parts, and will incur a cost of over Rs 55200 crore.

Presently, the Delhi Metro operates 399 lifts and 490 escalators across its 140 Metro stations, 8 depots and other installations in the system. Around 75 crore Metro commuters use these lifts and escalators every year while traversing in the Delhi Metro. On a daily basis, 12 lakh people use escalators while 3 lakh use lifts.

The DMRC has also been beautifying lift shafts in the upcoming Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor of Phase 3.
