From struggling at 1 for 2, Bangladesh eventually posted a total of 261 against Sri Lanka in the opening match in the Asia Cup 2018 on Saturday. They managed to do that majorly because of the fighting century from their experienced man, Mushfiqur Rahim, who registered his highest One-Day International (ODI) score during his knock of 144 off 50 balls.

En route to his sixth ODI century, the wicketkeeper-batsman broke and made a few records. His 144 was the second highest individual score in the Asia Cup after Virat Kohli’s 183 against Pakistan in the 2012 edition.

Sangakkara’s 121 against Bangladesh at Karachi was the highest individual score by a wicketkeeper in the Asia Cup. Ten years later, the record was finally broken, courtesy of Mushfiqur’s 144.

The 31-year-old now also holds the record of the highest individual ODI score by a Bangladeshi in a match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The highest score irrespective of the side in Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka still belongs to Dilshan, who had struck an unbeaten 161 off 146 during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup at Melbourne.

In the same match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on Saturday, the former had another hero in Tamim Iqbal, who came out to bat just two hours after he discovered he had a fractured left wrist.

While attempting to pull off Suranga Lakmal’s ball, Tamim was struck on his left wrist in the second over of the day. The Bangladeshi batsmen immediately called for a physiotherapist before he was retired hurt on two runs off three balls.

Tamim was later taken to a hospital and scans there revealed a crack on the outside of his index finger.

However, to everyone’s surprise, when Bangladesh lost their ninth wicket, just two hours after discovering about the fracture, Tamim walked out to bat with Mushfiqur Rahim. That bold decision helped Bangladesh add 32 crucial runs for the last wicket as Mushfiqur finished with a heroic 144 and his side posted a total of 261.

Tamim, who faced just one delivery, positioned his hand as if in a sling. He had four fingers from his left gloves popping out to support a special padding on the glove. Although he did not score any runs then, but his decision to come back showed his temperament and pride.

Tamim and Mushfiqur added crucial 32 runs for the final wicket before they won by 137 runs.
