Meet Simone Tata, Ratan Tata's stepmother who headed Rs 70000 crore firm, contributed to success of Lakmé

The business tycoon Ratan Tata is well-known for his business accomplishments and humanitarian efforts. He is not the only person, though, to have made significant progress in the business world. One of the most well-known Indian businessmen worldwide is Ratan Tata. One such Tata family member is Simone Tata, who is the mother of Noel Tata and Ratan Tata's stepmother. She significantly contributed to the creation and achievement of Lakmé. 

Family members of former Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata have operated several successful businesses over the years, and the majority of them are well known for philanthropic endeavours. Few people are aware of Ratan Tata's stepmother Simone Tata, who formerly served as chairwoman of the well-known cosmetics company Lakme. 

Simone Tata who hails from Geneva, Switzerland, was 23-year-old traveller in India when she met Sir Ratanji Tata's adopted son Navan Hormusji Tata, the father of Ratan Tata. After dating for a few years, the two got married in 1955, and Simone relocated permanently to Mumbai, India's financial hub. The couple was blessed with son, Noel Tata, Ratan Tata's stepbrother in 1957.

Simone Tata joined Tata Oil Mills, Lakme in 1962, a small subsidiary, few years afterward. Over the course of her 20 years with the company, she progressed to the position of chairperson. In 1989, Simone was appointed to the board of Tata Industries as an effect of Lakme's growth.

In 1996, Tata sold Lakme to Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL), and the proceeds were used to launch Trent. Trent Limited, firm with market cap of 700.23 billion INR, owns the bookstore Landmark and the Westside chain of retail clothing stores. Prior to October 30, 2006, Simone Tata presided as Trent Ltd.'s non-executive chairman.

Noel Tata, her son, serves as both Tata Investment Corporation's chairman and Trent's chairman.  Noel attended Sussex University as well as INSEAD business school in France for International Executive Programme. He serves on the boards of Voltas, Titan Industries, and Kansai Nerolac Paints, among others. Aloo, Noel's wife, is her daughter-in-law and is related to Pallonji Mistry of the Shapoorji-Pallonji group, which holds the majority ownership of Tata Sons.
