Salman Pasha is looking for a school that will accept him the way he is.
Salman, 17, has been putting on weight over the last couple of years and he has touched 165 kg now. Doctors have diagnosed it as a case of primary obesity. He quit school because of taunts from mates over his increasing weight. But, now, he is hoping to get back to normal life, study and play, thanks to the efforts of doctors at St Philomena’s Hospital.
“I was studying in a school on Mysore Road,” Salman said.
“Things were good till I started putting on kilos and my friends started teasing me. They used to call me motu (fatso). Also, I was finding it difficult to walk for long, and was unable to play with friends. Since it became difficult to go through this embarrassment every day, I stopped going to school,” he said.
The second of four children of Rehana and Adil Pasha, Salman’s problem started about three years ago. “He started putting on a lot of weight and touched around 90 kg. None of my other children is fat,” said Rehana, a resident of Kalasipalya.
The family consulted several doctors, but to no avail. Later, a well-wisher referred the child to St Philomena’s Hospital, where, considering the financial condition of the parents, the hospital agreed to treat him for free.
Rehana, who works in an agarbatti factory, is the only bread-earner in a family of six. Adil Pasha, her husband, fractured his right hand in an accident and is at home now.
“Salman’s is a case of primary obesity with no secondary complications except for sleep apnoea. When he was brought to St Philomena’s Hospital, he was around 165 kg. He was put on a liquid diet of 1,500 calories per day, for the last 15 days, with essential vitamin supplements. He now weighs 131 kg. We are planning to reduce another six kilograms before performing a bariatric surgery on him,” said Dr J Anand, consultant, general and laparoscopic surgery. While the date for the surgery has not been confirmed, the doctor said that it would take place some time next week.
“This is going to be a laparoscopic surgery post which he will be able to resume normal life in two days. But, Salman will continue to be on liquid diet for 20 more days, before getting back to his normal diet,” Dr Anand said.
If Salman strictly followed the diet regime, physiotherapy and exercise plans as suggested by the doctors after the surgery, he would be able to lose around 60%-70% of his weight in three months, Dr Anand said. However, he would have to avoid fat, oil and rice, he said.
