The Gujarat High Court has sought a reply from the state government after a public interest litigation (PIL), questioning the poor upkeep of Amipur Dam in Porbandar, came up for hearing. The division bench of Acting Chief Justice AS Dave and Justice Biren Vaishnav, during the hearing of the petition on Wednesday, issued a notice to the Porbandar collector directing him to file his reply in the case within April 9.

The PIL, filed by Bharat Parmar, provides that the decades-old dam is in a poor condition due to the lack of maintenance by the state government. Parmar has sought the court's intervention in the case to ensure that the wall and sluice gates of the dam are repaired before the monsoon to ensure that water, which is a precious commodity in the region, is not wasted. He has also contended that although funds are available for the maintenance, the same is not being carried out in complete contravention of the norms.

The petitioner has also submitted that around 60,000 people are using the irrigation facility made available from the dam and several villages are completely dependent on the dam for their water needs. However, due to the poor maintenance of the dam and the canals, the same is full of mud and is salty rendering it useless. Parmar has also pointed out that a huge amount of water is wasted as the sluice gates do not shut completely due to their poor maintenance.

Parmar also submitted to the court that he has made several representations to the government for repairing the wall and gates of the dam, but in vain.
