Gir lions will not be relocated, situation under control: Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani

Snubbing allegations that are drooling over the state for neglecting Gujarat's pride – Asiatic lions in Gir forest, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said on Sunday that the situation in Gir forest is under control. Addressing media persons at Bilkha in Junagadh district, Rupani, referring to recent deaths of as many as 23 lions due to various illness in Gir forest, said, "We are investigating the issue of the health of lions. A survey of the health of lions and its surrounding areas have been conducted, blood samples of the lions were also taken and the reports are negative. Hence there is no need to worry. Lions are safe in Gujarat and there will not be any relocation."

He added, "For securing the health of the lions in future an administration has been set up for faster diagnose and treatment. Gujarat government is dedicated to protecting lions. Vaccinations from the USA have been imported on a priority basis. All level of works is being carried out in coordination among of the forest department, medical teams and Government of India. The situation is under control.

Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel on Saturday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggesting measures to tackle large-scale deaths of Asiatic lions. In his letter, the Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat said the death of Gir lions is a manifestation of negligence and result of the state government's prolonged mismanagement and poor oversight.

At least 23 lions, all from a single area in Gir forest, have died over the past three weeks due to various reasons, prime among them is Canine Distemper Virus and Protozoa infection.
