Ahmedabad: Now, free Wi-Fi in BRTS buses

The aim behind this initiative is to provide seamless connectivity to the commuters of 300 BRTS buses, under the Smart City project.

Taking a step towards modernisation and being technology driven city, the civic authority will come up with free wi-fi in buses by mid-year. After setting up free wi-fi zones in the city, now the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is coming up with wi-fi in BRTS buses. The aim behind this initiative is to provide seamless connectivity to the commuters of 300 BRTS buses, under the Smart City project.

"There are more than 180 free wi-fi zones in the city. Now for the seamless connectivity for the commuters, we are coming up with In Bus Wifi service in BRTS. All the existing BRTS terminus will have free wi-fi access," said Amul Bhatt, the standing committee chairman, AMC.

"This means, when a person boards a BRTS for transportation, s/he will get seamless internet connectivity at the bus stop and inside the bus," added Bhatt.

Giving insights to the project, a senior officer from BRTS said that phase wise all the BRTS buses will have the facility. "We have requested proposals from the private bidder for the services. Phase wise we will introduce the service in all buses. The system will give internet access to 100 devises at a time per bus," said the official.

"Around 1.50 lakh commuters avail the BRTS buses daily. By providing wi-fi connectivity, it will increase the number of commuters," remarked the official.

According to the official, this service will attract

student. "The project will be a huge benefit for the students as it will increase their work productivity. No other transportation service has provided this facility," said the official.

According to Afrin Shaikh, a student of Gujarat University, " I am waiting for the non-stop internet access at free of cost. Now I can download study material even while travelling," he said.
