The 50-year-old CN Vidyalaya Fine Arts College in the city witnessed an unusual incident on its campus on Wednesday morning. Jetha Ram, a final year Applied Arts student, savagely assaulted two senior professors with a wicket stump because they had called his father to the college to inform him about his poor attendance.

Professors Ashwin Dholakia and Vishnu Patel sustained injuries on the neck and back after they were beaten up by Jetha. The two professors had called the student's father to the college to inform him about his son's low attendance. The college is currently accepting forms from eligible final year students for the board examination to be conducted in March.

When Jetha learnt that his father, Molu Ram, had come to meet the principal earlier in the morning and discuss his progress with the professors, he was infuriated. He apparently decided to beat up the two teachers for this.
One of Jetha's classmates told DNA on the condition of anonymity that he first asked the other students to vacate the classroom. "Then he sent two of his friends to call the professors," the classmate said. "The professors first went downstairs intending to meet the principal but Jetha met them on the way and attacked our teacher, Ashwin Dholakia."

When Vishnu Patel, the other teacher, saw this, he rushed towards the principal's cabin to inform him about the incident. But Jetha attacked him also on the way. Both the professors were badly injured and became almost unconscious.

"I was shocked when I heard people screaming," said Ratilal Kasudharia, principal of the college. "The professors had fallen and were on their knees. It was clear that they were in great pain. We immediately called 108 and rushed them to hospital. We also informed the police and the trustees about the incident." The professors were admitted to VS Hospital where they were treated for their injuries.

Students believe that a former student of the college is behind such anti-social activities. He allegedly still visits the campus regularly and instigates impressionable youngsters.

A trustee, too, has a similar view. "This college has produced many well known artists and sculptors but some anti-social elements want to malign our image," said Dr TJ Purani, the college trustee.

"I am not afraid of carrying out my duties. I have been teaching for the past 15 years and will report for work tomorrow too," said Patel. Later in the day, an FIR was filed. Jetha Ram is absconding.

Incidentally, this is the second time Vishnu Patel has been targeted. He had received death threats earlier from some students, and had filed a complaint back then too. An was lodged with the Ellisbridge police for today's incident. As per police sources Jetha Ram is absconding.
