Here’s news to cheer for engineering course aspirants in the state who are seeking seats through the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA). It was decided at the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) general council meeting that was held at New Delhi on Monday to grant approval to all the existing 167 engineering colleges in Karnataka.

In all, the colleges would offer about 36,000 seats in the counselling. However, the six new colleges that had obtained the state’s permission did not get the AICTE nod.

Officials from the state who had attended the meeting confirmed that all the existing institutions in the state were granted approval by the council. “We tried our level best and I don’t think any of the institutions in the state will be in trouble. The council has published information about new engineering colleges too,” said an AICTE official.

The council officials added that the number of seats would be similar to that of last year, which would not affect engineering seat aspirants. “We do not know the exact number of new colleges in Karnataka that have applied for approvals, but we received about 16 to 20 applications from the south-western region and most of them failed to meet the criteria,” an official said.

Official sources at AICTE said that all information in this regard and the list of approved colleges would be published on its website by Tuesday evening. Dr SM Suresh, director, research and development, AICTE, said, “We were planning to update the information by today itself, but it needs time as it should be error-free. The council staff are working all through the night to complete the work. We have kept up our promise to publish the seat matrix and list of colleges by June 30.”

Dr Gopal Mugeraya, advisor, AICTE, said, “No one can complain about the system as the process has been very democratic and transparent, right from the process of scrutiny.”
