Apple iPhone is already dominating the smartphone segment with a growing market share and soon it may also go big on the laptop market. As per a report by DigiTimes, Apple is working on new cheaper MacBook models that will directly rival the growing market of Google Chromebooks that are primarily focused on the education sector. The new cheaper Apple MacBooks will be different from the existing MacBook Air and Pro lines. The company will likely use metal casing but will be made of different materials along with more affordable mechanical components. Currently, the cheapest Apple MacBook Air is available at Rs 99,900 on the official Apple store and the cheaper version has to be significantly less than it to compete against Google Chromebooks. For context, the Apple iPhone 14 Plus is retailing for Rs 89,900 on the store.

The report further reveals the laptop may come in the second half of 2024 based on a lack of related activity at Apple suppliers like Quanta Computer and Foxconn. Over the past few years, Chromebooks have gained significant popularity among the buyers. As per DigiTimes Research, more than 13.9 million Chromebooks were shipped in 2019, increasing to over 30.4 million in 2020 and 33.5 million in 2021.
