Unadkat not far from being recalled into Indian team: Sitanshu Kotak

Unadkat played for India 'A' and Rest of India before he appeared in Ranji Trophy. After a handful of Ranji Trophy games, he was selected to play for India in South Africa. Maybe India felt the need for a young left-arm pacer. He was very young then.

Jaydev Unadkat is very, very hard working. Physically, he is strong. His core strength is outstanding. Last year, he had a stress fracture in the back. Before the last Ranji Trophy game in the 2014-15 season against Odisha, he spent 15 days with me at Rajkot.

What I noticed was that he needed to change his bowling action. We arrived at a conclusion that there were three-four things that he needed to change. He is still working on them. He may not be able to do 100 per cent things but he is getting close to that. His run-up or his gather are the basic things and his injuries were related to them. We worked on that and he is trying his best to adjust as much as he can.

If his alignment is right, he will get the best out of his ability. When you align and balance properly, your swing and seam are related to them. When you go wrong with basics, you struggle at delivery point and that's when your body force is directed to the other direction. If alignment is good, there is less chance of injury. He still has to consistently hit the seam and only then do fast bowlers get something out of it. He is getting close to reaching there.

But that happened to be his only Test before being dropped. In that one game in South Africa, maybe they thought he was not still good enough, maybe he was not ready for that level of cricket. After he was dropped, he did reasonably well in Ranji Trophy.

I am sure he is not far from being recalled into Indian team. Left-arm fast bowling is a department that every team wants.

From the last season, I have told him to focus on batting as well. He is such a strong batsman, he can turn into a very good all-rounder. He can easily score 50 anytime. He scores runs in quick time. I work more on bowlers' batting. In a two-hour net session after their bowling, there is no point sitting or standing idly. Either I send them to gym or make them bat.
