When Rizvi Springfield High School’s (Bandra) Sarfaraz Khan hammered a record-breaking 439 in Harris Shield last year, the then 12-year-old Armaan Jaffer, nephew of India player and Mumbai skipper Wasim Jaffer, waiting for his chance to bat, calmly watched the spectacle from the pavilion.
Circa 2010, Armaan has become the man of the moment.
In fact he bettered his teammate’s record by smashing a mammoth 498 in the Giles Shield match on Wednesday against IES Raja Shivaji (Dadar) at Karnataka Sports Association ground, Cross Maidan. It is the highest score by an individual in school cricket.
For the record, Armaan has overcome the earlier Giles Shield record of 366 that was in the name of Parikshit Walsankar of IES VN Sule Guruji.
Armaan took 490 balls and hit 77 boundaries before getting out in the slips, two short of 500. Once the youngster got out, Rizvi declared their innings at 800 for eight. Raja Shivaji were 52 for two at the end of the second day’s play.
“It feels great to play such a long innings. I missed out on 500 but it is destiny,” a shy Armaan told DNA after the end of the day’s play.
The middle-order batsman, who was batting at 295 overnight, got out after lunch.
“I wanted to play a long innings. It was not easy but I had to be patient to score. However, I enjoyed my batting,” he said.
Father Kaleem was proud of the fact that his son broke the record. “The best thing which I liked about him was his determination and temperament. He batted with patience and responsibility,” he added.
Comparisons with his uncle Wasim, the Mumbai opener and captain, are inevitable. “Both are classy. Armaan is more aggressive than Wasim was in his school days. However, when Wasim was playing there was not enough exposure. Today’s kids have more facilities and tournaments to play,” Kaleem said.
Coach Raju Pathak was all praise of the youngster. “He played a clean innings. He did not play a single ball in the air. He is a sincere and disciplined player and I believe he will go a long way.”
