MUMBAI: The Board has swung into action. A day after India were officially knocked out of the World Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has called for a working committee meeting to take stock of the situation. The meeting has been called by BCCI president Sharad Pawar himself.

The meeting, to be held in Mumbai on April 7, will be attended by some former captains, including Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. A day before that, the office bearers of the Board will meet. Pawar himself was not available for comments but a spokesman said that the Board president would seek the advice of the former captains. “He will sit with experts like Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. He will discuss the debacle in the West Indies.” Pawar has already indicated that some harsh decisions will have to be taken.

One of the main topics of discussion will be the future of coach Greg Chappell. The coach’s contract with the BCCI ends on April 30. The Board president was non-committal on a change though. “First we have to decide if we want to change the coach. If we want to, then we’ll decide who will do the job better. It is not an individual’s decision. We will take such a major decision after taking advice from knowledgeable people,” Pawar told a television channel.

The working committee will also discuss the manager’s report about the team’s World Cup campaign which ended in the first phase itself. Pawar and his colleagues are also likely to sit down with the coach, who himself has gone on record that he has a few things to report to the Board. Chappell, who will be returning with the team to India, will be asked to stay till the meeting. The members of the selection committee too are expected to be called.

In his interview Pawar dwelt on having two teams — India seniors and India Blues. “We want to give exposure to young players. Everyone may not get a place in the main team. So to give exposure to the newcomers at international level we can have two teams, the India team and the India Blues team, so that they can get experience of the foreign pitches.”
