Eighty one years after Mahatma Gandhi’s famous Salt satyagraha to Dandi in protest against the British monopoly on salt in India, a group of Mumbaikars, along with non-resident Indians (NRIs), initiated a Dandi March II. This time, the protest is against corruption in the country.
The initiative is the idea of a group of non-resident Indians (NRIs) who are undertaking a 240-mile long march across several cities in the world, starting from San Diego, US. The rally was kicked off on March 12, the anniversary of Gandhiji’s Dandi Yatra, and culminated at San Francisco, US on March 26.
In Mumbai, the event was held between the Carter Road promenade and the Bandra Fort on Saturday. Mumbaikars and activists took to the streets to protest against corruption and to demand the passing of the Jan Lok Pal Bill in the Parliament. The Bill will empower citizens to sue corrupt officials and politicians.
