The city witnessed 234 deaths from 2,700 structural collapses including partial collapses in the last five-and-a-half years. The incidents also left 840 people injured.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation shared the data in response to a Right to Information Act plea by Shakeel Ahmed, the founder of NGO Adhikar.

"The RTI data shows more deaths due to collapses than terrorist attacks. The government should take preventive steps so that such accidents don't occur," said Shakil Ahmed.

The data also revealed that 987 people lost their lives in 49,179 cases of fire, gas leaks, tree falls, short circuit, oil spilling, drowning, road accidents, and other such mishaps registered with the civic disaster management unit between 2013 and 2018.

The most number of these incidents were recorded last year, the RTI data shows.

As per the details, 568 incidents were reported last year, in which 66 people died and 165 sustained injuries.

The year 2013 saw maximum deaths due to house/building collapses in which 101 people were killed and 183 injured.

Activist Ahmed has written to Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and Chief Fire Officer Prabhat Rahangdale, urging them to "take appropriate steps to prevent such disasters."
