As many as 42 students of Cathedral and John Connon School and 24 children from the Salaam Bombay Academy of Arts are all set to reprise their musical journey for a cause. On Saturday, both groups will perform at Blue Frog in Lower Parel, presenting the fourth edition of their hit charity music concert WE.
The two-hour show that will include solos, group performances and dances promises to give the audience an evening that they will remember for long. The show is a perfect ode to the role that music and art plays in the development of children.
Aditi Parikh, vice-president of communications and development at Salaam Bombay Foundation, said, "This concert is a great example of what consistent musical education can do. From a character change to a career choice, music and dance have their ways of becoming an intrinsic part of one's lives and the children of both institutions are no exceptions. We, at Salaam Bombay Foundation, have been working tirelessly to empower children with an active education in arts along with academic focus. This initiative has been instrumental in bringing children from two different sections of the society on the same platform."
It all started in December 2013, when 25 Class VII students of the Cathedral School formed a group called WE. The brainchild of the then seventh grader Mrinalini Somani, the concert was born out of a volunteering experience with the foundation. An inspired Somani mooted the idea to her batch-mates, who got on board instantly.
The first concert was held in 2013. The funds raised in the musical galas of the past have directly benefited 300 children in the Salaam Bombay Academy of the Arts, giving them the opportunity to receive advanced training in their chosen vocation and bringing them one step closer to their dream.
Talking about the initiative, Somani said, "This is the fourth consecutive year that WE is performing at Blue Frog. It is an incredible feeling. We believe that all children are created equal – some just lack the opportunity to develop their talents and showcase them. WE has brought about a change not only in the lives of the children of Salaam Bombay Foundation but also in ours. We are more aware of and thankful for all that we have been blessed with."
Running parallel to the Cathedral students' arts education is the Salaam Bombay Foundation's endeavour to bring world-class training in dance, music and theatre to children in government schools. The academy builds their confidence, fosters creativity and creates different vocations in the arts.
This year, providing unmatched training to Cathedral students is Mumbai's premier music school, the True School of Music. After several rounds of auditions, True School of Music shortlisted the participants and has been training them to master select songs.
