Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said on Wednesday that Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray would be inconsequential and the Sena will be reduced to an Opposition party after February 16. He said the Sena will succeed in achieving power only in Ratnagiri Zilla Parishad in the ongoing civic elections.

When asked why he does not talk against Shiv Sena or Bal Thackeray, Chavan said the Sena would be an insignificant party after the civic polls.

Talking to reporters at his official residence Varsha, Chavan said his government has initiated an inquiry against the corruption of Shiv Sena-BJP in the BMC. “The Sena-BJP regime in the civic body for the last 16 years had been disastrous. Right from roads, water and other basic amenities, the civic body has failed on all the fronts. The Shiv Sena points at the roads maintained by the MMRDA, but does not talk about the roads that are maintained by the BMC,” he said.

While claiming that the BJP is restricted only to Nagpur, Chavan said the Congress would not be able to achieve the power in Jalgaon and Ratnagiri zilla parishads. “To ensure that the failed saffron regime is pulled down from BMC, we have formed an alliance with the NCP despite the dispute on 24 seats of the 58 alloted to it,” he said.

Without naming any leader Chavan said that few of the leaders from the alliance want Shiv Sena to retain power in the civic body. “I don’t want to name anyone but some leaders want the Sena to survive. If the alliance between the Congress and the NCP remains till 2014, there would be no opposition parties. Our alliance will fight the assembly elections together,” he added.

Reiterating his opinion about the NCP, Chavan said the party came into existence out of personal ambition. “However, I don’t think the NCP will pull away from the Congress as no party would like to keep away from the power,” he said.
