Shikhar Dhawan notched up his second consecutive fifty in IPL 2020 when he smashed 57 for Delhi Capitals against Rajasthan Royals at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The left-hander shared a partnership of 85 with Shreyas Iyer, who also hit a fifty as Delhi Capitals reached a competitive score which was defended by the bowlers in grand style. However, during the course of his knock, Shikhar Dhawan broke a record and went past Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli.

The knock of 57 was Shikhar Dhawan’s 39th fifty and put him second in the all-time list for the most fifties by a batsman in the history of the Indian Premier League. Dhawan’s 39th fifty took him past Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina’s number of fifties which are remarkably similar at 38. David Warner has the most fifties in the IPL with 46.

David Warner also has the most fifty-plus scores in IPL with 50 while Chris Gayle has the most centuries with six. Virat Kohli is second with five. Shikhar Dhawan, on the other hand, has no centuries in the IPL with his highest score being 97.

Standing captain

During the Rajasthan Royals’ chase, in the fifth over, Shreyas Iyer dived at mid off to stop a certain boundary but he landed awkwardly on his shoulder and was in serious pain. Iyer did not take to the field for the rest of the game and Shikhar Dhawan was the acting captain.

After the end of the match, Dhawan gave an update but gave Delhi Capitals fans some relief that Iyer’s injury is not serious. “He's (Iyer) in pain but his shoulder is moving. We'll get proper report tomorrow. One moment it was quite even and to pick it back from there was a team effort. Was important we stayed positive as a team. Knew their batting isn't deep. Knew if we got their top-order we can get them. Everytime we want them to deliver they're delivering. Courage he showed, line and length he bowled was amazing (Deshpande). Have to keep the momentum. Long tournament. Will keep the process going,” Dhawan said.
