Assembly Election Results 2018 Live: Counting of votes for Assembly elections in five states - Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Telangana - began at 8 am on Tuesday to decide the fate of over 8,500 candidates in 678 assembly seats. While five states carry a total 679 seats but due to the death of a candidate in Rajasthan, polling was countermanded on one seat. The votes are sealed in 1.74 lakh EVMs which were opened to decide who will form governments in five states. These electronic voting machines are now stored in over 670 strongrooms across the five states. 

The five-state polls have been billed as semi-finals before the 2019 national polls, with the Congress asserting that the mandate from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram on Tuesday would send a "clear message" against the Narendra Modi government at the Centre.

These five Assembly elections would be crucial for the BJP as it gears up for the Lok Sabha election next year and is in power in three of these states Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. While the Congress is in power in Mizoram, Telangana Rashtra Samithi ruled Telangana before the Assembly was dissolved.

Exit polls on December 7 predicted a Congress win in Rajasthan, while survey agencies were seemed to be divided over outcomes in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. According to exit polls, the TRS is likely to retain the state while Congress may lose Mizoram, the last northeastern state it ruled. 

While voting in these Telangana and Rajasthan was conducted on December 7, Chhattisgarh went to polls in two phases on November 12 and 20. Polling in Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram was held on November 28.

The party has sought appointment by sending an email and a fax too.  Kamal Nath, MP Congress President, wrote a letter stating that the party was the single largest and also had the support of all the Independents.

9:27 IST Tuesday, 11 December 2018: The BJP is leading in six seats and the Congress in two in Rajasthan in the first round of counting. BJP candidates have taken an early lead in Anupgarh, Masuda, Pali, Bali, Pindwara-Abu and Reodar seats, while the Congress is surging ahead in Pokaran and Jayal. Energy minister Pushpendra singh is the BJP candidate from Pali. He is leading with a margin of 1,113 votes.
