Diamantaire Nirav Modi, wanted by Indian federal agencies, is in London, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officially confirmed on Monday. The agency, headed by IPS officer Alok Kumar Verma, had feigned clueless two-and-half months ago when UK's minister of state for countering extremism Baroness Williams had confirmed Indian government about his presence.

Now, according to CBI, the UK authorities confirmed Nirav's presence in the country on Sunday through a mail, on the basis of the diffusion notice issued against him by the probe agency to Interpol. A diffusion notice is an international alert that notifies law enforcement authorities in one country that those of another country are seeking the arrest of a specific person.

The agency stated that it has approached the Interpol (Manchester) to arrest Nirav, wanted in Punjab National Bank scam of worth Rs 13,578 crore, and started the process of extradition. In July, the Interpol had issued a Red Corner Notice against Nirav and others on the request of the CBI, probing the PNB scam.

The CBI had filed chargesheets in the case on May 14 where it had alleged that Nirav, through his companies, had siphoned off funds using fraudulent letter of undertakings issued from PNB's Brady House branch in Mumbai.

Nirav, along with his uncle Mehul Choksi of the Gitanjali group, is being probed in the fraud case by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate.

The FIR was filed on March 4 by the CBI against Nirav. He left India along with his family in the first week of January, weeks before the scam was reported to the CBI. His wife Ami, a US citizen, left on January 6 and Choksi on January 4.

Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court directed the CBI on Monday to not discard the call data records of its officer who is investigating the scam.

A single bench of Justice Ajey Gadkari also directed the CBI to file its affidavit in response to an application filed by an accused, Miten Pandya, alleging illegal detention before his arrest in connection with the case.
