The AAP had insiniuated that PM Mod's degree was false. However, several of the allegations don't hold up.

Over the last few days, the Aam Aadmi Party claimed among other things that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degrees – a BA from Delhi University and an MA from Gujarat University – were fake. This led BJP president Amit Shah and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to release his degrees to the public. However, this didn’t seem to deter the AAP who countered that the degree was fake.

"Docs in DU have been sealed. BJP presents Farzi docs in a PC n gets real records sealed? Why? Implement CIC order. Allow inspection," Kejriwal tweeted. Earlier, addressing a press conference, AAP leader Ashutosh said Modi's name does not match with what has been mentioned in the BA marksheet and the MA degree and claimed there were discrepancies in the year of passing as well.

"Nakal ke liye bhi akal ki zarurat hai (One needs brains even to copy). The BA marksheet is dated 1978 while the degree is of the year 1979. His name in the BA marksheet is Narendra Kumar Damodardas Modi while in Masters degree, it is Narendra Damoderdas Modi," said the AAP leader. He further said, "1975 marksheet has the PM's name as Narendra Kumar Damodardas Modi, the 1976 one spells it as Narendra Damoderdas Modi and the 1977 one spells it as Narendra Damodardas Mody.  "His MA degree says he had done his post-graduation in 'Entire Political Science'. Is that even possible ? There are a lot of glaring discrepancies in his degrees and masters' degree," said Ashutosh. "If degree is of the same student, why did the name and the roll no. change from 1977 to 1978? Was there a change of name executed? Why was there a change of roll no.?" it asked.

It also alleged that the roll number was missing from the MA certificate. "The degree in 1983 appears to have been prepared by someone who doesn't usually do the task; missing roll no. and use of extraneous 'Entire' is glaring," it said. The AAP said its leaders will visit Delhi university's Chief Public Information Officer's office tomorrow to get details of Modi's BA degree and even asked Shah and Jaitley to join them.

The AAP raised these questions on their social media handle as well.

AAP Question 1. Are the marksheets from 1977 and 1978 of the same student or different students? (note: MODY vs MODI and extra KUMAR in the first marksheet)

Explanation: The main argument seems to be that the spelling of Narendra Modi’s name has changed. However, as anyone who has ever had a brush with the authorities knows that these clerical errors are inevitable. Even the extra Kumar is often added to the names of many individuals, as is in some other cases one’s father’s name becomes a middle name. In fact, we’ve had admit cards handed out to cows in the past!

The Delhi University also said that the two different roll numbers which were allotted to Modi in 1977 and 1978, and his name 'Narendra Kumar Damodar Das Mody', which was seen on the marksheet in AAP leader Ashutosh on TV was a spelling mistake, reported India Todaya phenomenon not totally alien to the AAP leader.

AAP Question 2.  If the same student, why did the name and the roll no. change from 1977 to 1978. Was there a change of name executed? Why was there a change of roll no.?

Explanation: The DU clarified that the two roll numbers was a mistake, along with the spelling of his name.

AAP Question 3. The degree in 1983 appears to have been prepared by someone who doesn't usually do the task; missing roll no. and use of extraneous "Entire" is glaring.

While we’ve no comment on the insinuation that the degree in 1983 was prepared by 'someone who doesn’t usually do the task', the use of the term ‘entire’ can be explained by the fact that in the distance education mode, one is not bound by the inflexible system of a regular course. A professor who wished to remain anonymous explained that in distance education courses you can pass a ‘part’ of the exam and appear for the rest at your leisure. So, for example, a student doing a two-year course has five years to complete the course.

AAP also had some queries about the total marks:

Passed with those marks? How?

Twitter User Raju Das explained the issue about the calculation:

Meanwhile, the Gujarat University said Modi changed his name from "Narendrakumar Damodardas Modi," which he used in admission form for MA Part I, to "Narendra Damodardas Modi" in MA Part II but everything is "genuine".

Acting Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University, Mahesh Patel told PTI, "Since he (Modi) had taken admission in MA Part I in 1981 on the basis of his DU degree, he used the name Narendrakumar Damodardas Modi. But when filling MA Part II form, he dropped 'kumar' and wrote Narendra Damodardas Modi in the form."

"So his degree was issued on the basis of his name in MA Part II. Everything is genuine. Since there was no computerised system and everything was to be done manually, a candidate could charge his name slightly. Now that we have computerised system in place, so whatever the name of the candidate filled in admission form carries on in the second part as well," he added.

Patel said Modi obtained 237 marks out of 400 in MA Part I and 262 marks out of 400 in MA Part II.

Hopefully, this answers all the questions raised by the Aam Aadmi Party about Modi's degree.
