'He did not say that... look carefully': Jaishankar says Modi's 'Ab ki baar Trump...' remark shouldn't be misinterpreted

Stating that India has a non-partisan stand in US domestic politics, Jaishankar said, "PM Modi with his remark 'Ab Ki baar Trump Sarkar' only referred to what Trump had himself said during his 2016 Presidential campaign."

Days after PM Modi during his successful 'Howdy, Modi' event in Houston said, 'Ab ki Baar Trump Sarkar', the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is on a three-day US visit refuted to a notion being carried out that prime minister's remark was to endorse Trump's candidature for US presidential elections 2020.

Stating that India has a non-partisan stand in US domestic politics, Jaishankar said, "PM Modi with his remark 'Ab Ki baar Trump Sarkar' only referred to what Trump had himself said during his 2016 Presidential campaign."

On September 22, PM Modi said, "Friends, we in India have connected well with President Trump, the words of candidate Trump, 'Ab ki baar Trump sarkar."

Jaishankar during a presser in Washington while rebutting a notion that PM Modi used the slogan to support Trump's candidature asked people to look carefully to what the prime minister had said.

The EAM further added saying that what PM Modi said was candidate Trump had used in his campaign, therefore the prime minister was talking about the past.

Talking to reporters, the Jaishankar added they shouldn't misinterpret remarks made by Minister Narendra Modi.

"I think, please, look very carefully at what the Prime Minister said. My recollection of what the Prime Minister said was that candidate Trump had used this ("Ab ki baar Trumpsarkar"). So PM is talking about the past," Jaishankar added.

 September 22 'Howdy, Modi' programme saw two leaders came together for the mega community event which was held in honour of the Prime Minister.

The leaders of the two largest democracies showered compliments on each other, with Modi stating that India has a friend in the White House and Trump calling Modi one of US' greatest friends.

"I am thankful to Trump that he came to Houston. He is my friend but he is also a good friend of India," Modi said at the meeting.

The two leaders held bilateral talks on Tuesday. US President Donald Trump, while talking to reporters, said the two countries will have a trade deal very soon.
