Chemical sector should use environmental-friendly model of development as it would pave way for a society which will be in sync with nature, said chief minister Narendra Modi while inaugurating the three-day conference of IndiaChem Gujarat 2009. He said the industry should adopt clean technology so that no damage is caused to the environment.

“Every chemical unit should have rain water harvesting system so that it consumes less water. Units should also innovate and adopt the technology which will enable them to recycle the waste,” Modi added.

Speaking on the occasion, chemicals and petrochemicals minister Saurabh Patel said that the industry must focus on research and development activities in the chemical sector and make the state a hub for research and development (R&D).

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) along with the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Government of India, Government of Gujarat, is organising the meet.

Jai Hiremath, chairman, national chemicals committee of FICCI said that the conference would help stakeholders of chemical industry to understand issues and developments concerning the industry and also to provide a platform for networking and business promotion in the state of Gujarat.

Meanwhile, the 6th buyer-seller meet of Chemexcil, a central-government-run chemical export promotion body, was inaugurated in the evening. Welcoming guests, Anand Ladsariya, chairman, Chemexcil said, “Our objective is to highlight India’s capability to offer a steady and sustainable supply at low cost and to provide unique opportunity to major buyers from focus countries to interact with Indian manufacturers”. Over 60 participants from 23 countries are attending the meet.
