Amid the coronavirus crisis, the dates for Bihar Assembly Elections 2020 are about to be announced. Election Commission will announce the election dates in a press conference. After which formally the electoral battleground between political parties would begin. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is hopeful of returning to power again. The main opposition Grand Alliance is led by RJD's Tejaswi Yadav. The main constituents of the Grand Alliance include Congress and left parties.

Political commentator and strategist Amitabh Tiwari considers Bihar elections very important for NDA. "After a not so great track record in last 4 state elections post-Lok Sabha 2019 elections. Nitish is seeking a 4th term and history shows it is very difficult to get re-elected, many big leaders like Lalu, Shivraj, Raman, Gogoi, Shiela Dixit, have lost. Nitish could face severe anti-incumbency which is natural. Both alliances are facing issues regarding seat distribution," said Tiwari.

Let us understand the basic arithmetic of assembly elections in Bihar as the fight has formally begun now.

How many seats in the assembly, how many now?

Bihar Assembly has a total of 243 assembly seats. At present, the alliance of BJP and JDU is in power. RJD is the largest party in Bihar, which has 73 seats. But Nitish Kumar's JDU broke the alliance with RJD and joined BJP in 2017.

NDA vs Grand Alliance battle

Once again, the electoral battle in Bihar is to be fought between the NDA and the Grand Alliance. It has been announced by the BJP that the NDA will contest elections under the leadership of Nitish Kumar.

• BJP - 54
• LJP - 2
• HAM - 1
• Independents - 4

Grand Alliance (total seats 101)

• RJD - 73
• Congress - 23
• CPI (ML) - 3

2. Vacant seats - 12

Who will be the chief minister?

The Bharatiya Janata Party has once again announced that Nitish Kumar will be the face of the NDA. That is, once again the competition will be in Nitish Kumar vs others. On the other hand, RJD has made Tejashwi Yadav the chief ministerial candidate but many parties of the grand alliance are not accepting his leadership. In NDA, Chirag Paswan of LJP is projecting himself as a face and is making noise against Nitish Kumar.

This time in Bihar, there is also a new name Pushpam Priya Chaudhary, who announced the candidature for the post of Chief Minister by advertising on the front page of newspapers. She is also constantly promoting herself in different areas.

Amitabh Tiwari said that Nitish who parted with NDA after Modi was named PM candidate in 2013, and joined hands with Lalu to defeat Modi in 2015, now needs more than ever the support of Modi to sail him through.
