Police has arrested two persons accused of firing at a religious procession at Pratapgarh late Saturday night, the incident escalated in a communal clash that left over a dozen people injured. Tension prevailed in the district through Sunday as local organisations invoked a shut-down in protest. Incidents of communal violence and arson were also reported from districts of Bhilwara and Chittorgarh late night on Sunday, these were, however, contained in time. On Monday, Pratapgarh limped to normalcy amid heavy deployment of police personnel and restraining orders were imposed.

"The district has remain peaceful since the violence on Saturday night. We have arrested two accused in connection with the firing while further investiagtions are being held," said IG Udaipur Range, Anand Kumar Srivastava, who has rushed to Pratapgarh following the unfortunate clash.

Police have held the incident to be 'spontaneous' in nature and have denied it being 'politically motivated'.

Even as police have for now been able to restore peace, it's now evident that it was failure on part of the administration that led to the incident.

"A confrontation had earlier occurred between members of the two communities over the issue of mike levels," a police officer said about the events that unfolded in Talai area of Pratapgarh on Saturday evening.

It was, however, nearly two hours after the police mediation that three notorious elements on a bike fired upon the religious procession of the other community. This triggered stone-pelting and violence. While three persons were injured in firing, another dozen got hurt in the violence that followed.

By Sunday morning the incident of Talai had flared religious sentiments across the district and local outfits called for a district wide market shut-down.

Locals alleged that inaction on part of police had been boosting the morale of anti-social elements and despite several complaints, efforts have not been made to seize the illegal weapons.

The incidents of violence have once again reflected the rising intolerance levels among communities and politicians also tried to take advantage of the issue. However, the debate on mike levels at religious ceremonies that caused the tension once again got sidelined while the political clamor overwhelmed the happenings.
