Benedict Cumberbatch is one the few stars in Avengers: Infinity War to have the experience of handling massive and intense fan following of their work. His work on BBC Sherlock series seems to have prepared him for the magnitude of adulation and the Doctor Strange star couldn't agree more.
In a chat with Radio Times, Cumberbatch said, "Maybe the volume’s up a little. I don’t pay too much attention to it.
"I just enjoy the graft, and I enjoy the results, and the whole fan thing is sort of mind-boggling, and pretty f***ing generous and wonderful and humbling to be honest," he added.
Recalling his experience at the D23 (Disney's bi-annual convention) Cumberbatch said that the roaring ovation in the room, after the Avengers: Infinity War clip was presented for the first time, was 'validation for what we tried to achieve.'
Talking about the fandoms and Sherlock, Cumberbatch's views differ from that of Martin Freeman.
Freeman had said that working on Sherlock wasn't fun anymore. He blamed the pressure that allegedly comes from the show's 'rabid fans.'
Cumberbatch called this attitude 'pretty weak' and put the onus of conveying the intentions of characters on the storytellers. He added that his experience with the fans has been more positive.
"It’s the responsibility of the storytellers to manage that, really. And I think, you know, it’s pretty weak to blame that on fans. You’re either along for the ride or not, and I think to be kowtowing would, in some cases, disappoint fans – so…I don’t think it can all rest on that," he told Radio Times.
“I think there are more people responsible than the people receiving what you’re working on.”
Both, Cumberbatch and Freeman, will be seen in Avengers: Infinity War. There is still no clear word on season five of Sherlock.
