Veteran British and Hollywood actor Sir Michael Caine, 76, has said that the Conservative Party is the only one "giving young people a chance".

Visiting kids in South London, Caine said that he would be voting for the Tories in the May 6 general election.

The Sun quoted Caine as saying that 16-year-olds would be able to volunteer for two-months of community work in a National Citizen Service.

"What I had was a loving family, a loving father and an education. And what I didn't have - I didn't have drugs and I didn't have guns. You have now a very hard core of people who we've really got to save. That's what attracts me about this," he said

After being introduced by Mr Cameron, Sir Michael said, "I'm here because I'm a representative of all those youngsters that have been forgotten in this country."

He said the Tories were interested in "saving young people and giving them a chance in society".

Sir Michael also recalled his own time in the old military National Service of the 1950s.

He said it "wasn't very good" but insisted: "We do need something in place of it."
