Talking about taking a decision on reopening schools in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said that he will review the experience of other states, where schools have started reopening. However, he said, reiterating the Delhi government’s stand, that the ideal situation for reopening schools would be when the COVID-19 vaccination will be complete.
Schools in the national capital were shut down last year in March when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in India.
“The ideal situation would be to open schools after vaccination. We will see for some days the experiences of other states where schools are opening and then decide. Parents are still worried about their child’s safety,” he told reporters on the sidelines of an event in Timarpur, quoted news agency PTI.
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal had last week said, citing concerns over a possible third wave of COVID-19, that there are no plans to reopen schools until the vaccination process is completed.
As of now, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar have partially reopened schools. Meanwhile, other states, such as Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh have said they will start reopening schools from the first week of August.
Delhi had partially reopened schools this year in January, allowing physical classes for students of classes 9-12. However, schools were again suspended after COVID-19 cases in the nation started rising exponentially.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government has allowed schools’ auditoriums and assembly halls for training and meeting purposes. However, physical teaching and learning continue to remain suspended.
