Two of Delhi's top government hospitals -- Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital and Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital don't have a top boss after the medical directors retired this year. The hospitals which are attached with the medical institutes are being managed by the deans who have been given the additional charge by the government, for the time being.

Dr JC Passey and Dr Puneeta Mahajan, who were heading the Lok Nayak and Ambedkar hospital, respectively retired in May and June. Since then, the department of health has not assigned the post to any health officer. Sources in the hospitals said that the overall functioning has been affected because of the unavailability of a medical director.

"Though the dean of our institute is available for the hospital-based issues we cannot take all the administrative matters to him. The clinical and administrative issues have to be separated," said a senior doctor from Lok Nayak hospital requesting anonymity. The hospital witnesses 5,000 patients in the out-patient department on a daily basis.

Recently, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had ordered all the hospital heads to fill up all the vacancies in the department by September 15.

Sanjeev Khirwar, principal secretary (health) said that the process to hire the medical directors has begun. "We have shortlisted the candidates and the vacant posts will be filled in the coming days," Khirwar told DNA.

The 500-bedded Ambedkar hospital witnesses around 3,000 patients on a daily basis. The Cabinet recently approved the construction of a Mother and Child and Screening OPD Block at the Hospital at an estimated cost of Rs 195 crore, which will increase the bed capacity to 963 from the existing 500.

"We are trying to manage the work at the medical institute and the hospital. It is all about the time management. The admissions in the college are also going on and we are in the middle of an inspection by the Medical Council of India (MCI). We are hopeful that the vacant slot will be filled up soon," Dr Achal Gulati, director principal at the Ambedkar hospital said.

Not only this, Delhi government-run Deep Chand Bandhu hospital is also being managed by Dr Suman Rani, who has been given a temporary charge of the medical superintendent. Located in North-West Delhi, the hospital was built to cater to the needs of the residents in the area.

"The government must hire the medical superintendents for the hospitals. The entire functioning depends on the head and our hospital is growing in terms of the patients. We cannot depend on the temporary arrangements," 9:41 PM 8/23/2018said a senior doctor.
