Three Koreans held for smuggling gold at Delhi Airport

Three Korean nationals were arrested for trying to smuggle four gold bars of foreign origin collectively weighing 4 kg worth approximately Rs 1.26 crores.

In three separate incidents at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, the officials managed to arrest three Korean nationals and two Indian men for allegedly trying to smuggle gold into the country. Around 6.2 kg of gold in total were seized by the custom department on Saturday.

In the first case, three Korean nationals were arrested for trying to smuggle four gold bars of foreign origin collectively weighing 4 kg worth approximately Rs 1.26 crores.

Custom Officials intercepted a 45-year-old Korean national arriving from Seoul at IGI Airport on the basis of suspicion on Saturday and were able to recover the gold bars. The gold bars were seized under customs act and two of his associates waiting outside the airport to receive the gold were also placed under arrested, said the officials.

A 29-year-old man was arrested at Delhi Airport for reportedly trying to smuggle one silver coated gold ring weighing 686 grams and one silver coated gold piece weighing 434 grams worth Rs 35 lakh.

"On Saturday, while keeping surveillance on passengers arriving from Bahrain, one Indian national was intercepted by Customs officers after he had crossed the Green Channel.The passenger had arrived from Dammam via Bahrain to Delhi. Upon detailed personal search and thorough examination of his baggage, both gold articles concealed inside an Induction heater were recovered," said Deputy Commissioner of Customs (IGI Airport) Kalrav Mishra.

"The recovered gold articles weighing 1120grams have been seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962. Further, the passenger has been placed under arrest in accordance with Section 104 of the Customs Act, 1962," Mishra said.

In another incident, an Indian man arriving from Sharjah to Delhi on Saturday was arrested for trying to smuggle in four gold cut pieces of foreign origin collectively weighing 1050 grams, approximately worth Rs 33 lakh.

On landing in Delhi at Terminal-3, custom officials found him suspicious and conducted a detailed personal and baggage check. They recovered gold pieces weighing 1050 gram. The gold was seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962 and the accused was placed under arrest under Section 104 of the Customs Act, 1962
