England batsman Dom Sibley's wicket was how Day 1 of the first Test between India and England came to end at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. However, skipper Joe Root made sure to take the visitors to a solid position after losing two quick wickets as they post 263/3 on the board.

Sibley's wicket by Jasprit Bumrah could be the much-needed boost for India to lift their sagging spirits. At Tea, England were at 140/2 in 57 overs as in the second session, visitors did not lose any wicket and added 73 runs.

Joe Root, playing in his landmark 100th Test match, scored a century in a fashionable style. The England skipper had managed to smash a double century and a century in the two Tests against Sri Lanka in Galle as he ended with over 426 runs and took his average in Asia to over fifty.

Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting is the only cricketer to hit centuries in both innings on his 100th Test. With this ton, Joe Root also became the ninth player and third English cricketer after Colin Cowdrey and Alec Stewart to score the triple-digit on their 100th Test.

Joe Root, who has three consecutive centuries now in his last three Tests, also the first player in history to score a hundred in his 98th, 99th and 100th Test.

Indian bowlers tried to break the ongoing third-wicket partnership between Sibley and Root but failed to do so till the last over. Sibley scored his fourth Test fifty but was sent back for 87 thanks to Bumrah's fiery yorker.

Indian bowlers, including Ishant Sharma, Bumrah and Shahbaz Nadeem, failed to find a rhythm as they bowled three no-balls each while going for wickets.

Earlier, at Lunch, England`s score read as 67/2 in 27 overs. India were unlucky as Rishabh Pant dropped Burns in the initial overs of the game off Jasprit Bumrah.

But in the 24th over, spinner Ravichandran Ashwin brought the hosts back in the game and scalped Burns, who played a knock of 33 runs. Bumrah then sent Dan Lawrence back to the pavilion on a duck. Root joined Sibley in the middle and the duo survived the final overs before Lunch. England won the toss and opted to bat first.
