Budget 2019: Will there be tax and housing loan exemption for middle class?

The government could soon offer more surprises, especially for the middle class.

After the reservation for general class, Modi government could soon surprise the middle-class with more friendly annoucements. In order to lure the middle-class before 2019 polls, several media reports are claiming that Centre now mulling over to dole out income tax benefits in its last Union Budget that is set to be presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in about three weeks.

According to a a Times Now report, increase in savings limit, tax benefits for pensioners and more concessions on housing loan interest are being currently considered by the government. 

“In the last four budgets, we have given relief to salaried class as they are the most honest taxpayers of the country. We will do as much as we can this time too within the limitations of the interim budget,” a source told the publication. 

In a surprise announcement, the Union Cabinet on Monday declared 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker upper castes.

The Lok Sabha on Tuesday approved the Constitution (103th Amendment) Bill 2019 to amend Article 15 and 16 of the Constitution in order to provide 10 per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions to economically backward section in the general category with an overwhelming majority. Out of 326 MPs present in the House, only three voted against its passage.

The Bill was passed amidst heated exchanges between opposition and treasury benches. While the legalisation got an overwhelmed support cutting across the aisle, the main objections put forward by opposition MPs were that its introduction has violated the procedure and was brought in the House, without mandatory intimation. 

They also questioned bringing such significant legislation on the last day of the session and at the fag end of the tenure of NDA government, describing it a move to reap a political harvest in general elections.
