The 100-crore club was established in the mid-2000s when Indian films began to breach the mark with their domestic collections. Over time, this club has come to include any Indian film that crosses Rs 100 crore in box office earnings, whether domestic or worldwide. While several actors have multiple films in the 100-crore club, the number of directors there is fewer. And among them, one man rules the roost.

Indian director with most 100-crore films

Rohit Shetty has as many as nine films that have grossed 100 crores worldwide, starting with Golmaal 3 and right down to Sooryavanshi. This includes his highest-grosser Chennai Express, which earned Rs 423 crore.  His other 100-crore films include Singham (Rs 157 crore), Bol Bachchan (Rs 165 crore), Singham Returns (Rs 219 crore), Dilwale (Rs 377 crore), Golmaal Again (Rs 311 crore), and Simmba (Rs 400 crore). However, Shetty also has six films that have not made Rs 100 crore, including the likes of Zameen (Rs 18 crore), Sunday (Rs 32 crore), and Cirkus (Rs 62 crore).

The only Indian director with every film in 100-crore club

Karan Johar holds the distinction of having every film of his in the 100-crore club. The filmmaker, who began his journey as an assistant to Aditya Chopra in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, turned director with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998. The film was the highest-grossing Indian film of the year as it earned Rs 107 crore worldwide. Each of his subsequent films – Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, My Name is Khan, Student of the Year, Ae Dil Hai mushkil crossed 100 crores. He has now added a seventh film in the list with his latest release Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

Other directors with multiple 100-crore films

There are many other Indian filmmakers who have multiple films that have grossed over Rs 100 crore worldwide. Shankar has five such films, as does Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Then come Kabir Khan, Rajkumar Hirani, and SS Rajamouli, who all have four such films each. Rajamouli is the only filmmaker to have two films crossing the 1000-crore barrier as well.
