For 25-year-old Shailesh Jain and Anup Nair, life was going great guns in the US where they worked for VMware and Microsoft, respectively. “I was enjoying my job. There were no thoughts of being an entrepreneur till I met Nair, my college batchmate in San Francisco and the idea of entrepreneurship germinated in us,” said Jain. Both quit their jobs to come back to India and start a new venture.

Jain and Nair are founders of Mirraw, a company started a month back. Mirraw is an online community of fashion designers. It is a marketplace where small designers, who otherwise find it difficult to market their product,  set up boutiques and showcase their fresh designs to a wide audience on the Web.

“In the US, we were doing hardcore coding and working on projects. But, the kick to do something new and exciting made us come back to India. Earlier, we did only coding, but now we end up doing everything from coding to marketing to sales,” said Nair.

But why chose this field to start their venture?
“E-commerce is the next big thing. Our aim is to help designers build their brand online. Most of the upcoming designers rent out shelf space where they pay anywhere between 30% and 50% of the product price to the boutique owner,” the duo said.

“And that gives them a localised market restricted by region. We, on the other hand, give them a big audience on the internet, simplify their operations by taking care of shipping and payment, so that they can focus on their designing and leave the rest to us,” the duo added.

They aim to be a company that can be trusted by customers. “In India, e-commerce is still at a nascent stage and no other company  has managed to win customer trust as much as Flipkart has. There is a lot of scope for companies in this industry,” said Jain.

Sounding positive on India, they said the problems in the country are unique which provide young entrepreneurs like them opportunity to do something big. “Problems in the US are firsthand. Here, they are completely different. If there is a traffic problem here, there will be someone working on something to solve the issue. India is the place to be, as problems generate great ideas,” said Nair.

Coming from a business family, Jain did not face any parental pressure for quitting his job. However, Nair initially faced a hard time to make his parents understand his point of view.

“Thankfully, I did not have to struggle too long. In India, there is a fear of failure which stops people from starting there own venture. But slowly, things are changing. There are many incubation centres and VCs who are ready to take care of people like us,” Nair said. Since traditional advertisement campaigns are not viable for them at present, they are relying on word-of-mouth publicity for their firm.
