The city Crime Branch has arrested two people, one of them a civil engineering student, in connection with a debit card fraud. Interestingly, the accused made use of a gaming app for card games to use the debit card of the victim without even needing the One Time Password (OTP).

The case came to light after one Tushar Mattu a resident of Makarba filed a complaint stating that Rs 16,000 was taken from his account through his State Bank of India debit card. He also told the police that the money was used to buy chips for the card game app Teen Patti by Octro.

Police said that an analysis of the bank statement showed that the amount was used in three transactions on Octro. Details sought from Google lead the cops to Nikunj Khant, 23, a resident of Vastral and Hitesh Patel, 21, a resident of Amraiwadi. Cops also recovered two mobile phones that were used for the transaction. Nikunj is a final year civil engineering student while Hitesh has studied up to Class XII.

Police said Nikunj was into online games PubG and Teen Patti on Octro. He wanted money to buy chips for Teen patti and approached Hitesh and one Natu Thakore. The two used Nikunj's mobile phone to buy teen patti chips and used the victim's debit card for the same. Police suspect that the duo might have either stolen the details of the debit card or got hold of it through some other means. Since the app does not follow the two factor authentication when the chips are brought through debit and credit card, the victim never received a One Time Password.

Police said the duo not only brought the chips online but then sold it to other players online and got cash in return. Sometimes they would take payments in e-money.

Police also found that the three have earlier been arrested in connection with a similar case that was registered in Mulund Police station in Mumbai. They had also spent two months in jail.
